India have a lot to contend with as they try to level the ODI series against South Africa after losing the first match in Paarl by 31 runs. Centuries by Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen were backed by a spirited bowling performance that saw the hosts crush India both strategically and deftly. Chasing 297 on a slower surface, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli added over 90 before India’s batting unit stalled, from 152/3 to 214/8, falling well short of the South African total.
The defeat also cast doubt on KL Rahul’s long-term future as a leader. He will be looking to score himself after a poor performance in the first leg. While the team will look to make amends with the batting, the poor bowling performance in the first match has left the team management with a lot to think about. Time will tell whether India stick with the same bowling combination or bring in Deepak Chahar or Mohammed Siraj.

The Indian bowlers had no answer to Temba Bavuma and Rassi van der Dussen who scored contrasting centuries to claim the match result. Scoring runs at key moments is something a bowling alley needs to hone in on. Moreover, Venkatesh Iyer, who made his ODI debut on Wednesday, did not bowl once in the match, raising questions about his role in the team as an all-rounder.
South Africa (sa) Vs India (ind), 2nd Odi Highlights: Sa Cruise To Series Win
Rishabh Pant (16 off 22 balls) and Shreyas Iyer (17 off 17 deliveries) added 29 for the fourth wicket but fell in other overs as well. The couple may also come under the microscope after India’s dramatic stutter. India could have another debut if head coach Rahul Dravid decides to play with the batting combination. Shardul Thakur’s late innings after good knocks from Dhawan and Kohli was positive news for the Indian camp.
Another difference between the two sides was the efficiency of their spinning units. Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal put together 20 overs for 106 runs on the dash. On the other hand, Aiden Markram, Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj between them made 26 overs in 124 runs and scored four wickets. The visiting team has many problems to solve in order to avoid another series defeat on South African soil.
Ruturaj Gaikwad: Getting Gaikwad to the top cannot be described as a sudden change considering the 24-year-old batsman’s recent achievements in the domestic circles. The top run-scorer of the last edition of the IPL, Gaikwad scored 603 runs in just five Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021-22 matches, a staggering average of 150.75 and four centuries. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he scored 259 runs at an average of 51.80 and a strike percentage of 149.71.
Shikhar Dhawan: Returning to the game after last year’s tour of Sri Lanka, Shikhar Dhawan proved his worth by scoring an excellent 79, albeit in defeat. Despite his average performances in the domestic season, the 36-year-old left-hander was superb on the field, picking up 10 fours before falling victim to Keshav Maharaj.

Virat Kohli: Some said the former skipper didn’t look aggressive, Virat Kohli made a good half-century in the series opener – his first appearance for India as a clean hitter since 2016. Hitting 51, the 33-year-old Kohli played against the tide and died after going past Tabraiz Shami . He currently holds the record for most away ODI appearances for a team, beating the legendary Sachin Tendulkar in the previous match.
KL Rahul: Playing at the top with Shikhar Dhawan to cover the absence of Rohit Sharma, Rahul did not look good with the bat, scoring just 12 before falling victim to Aiden Markram. His captaincy and long-term leadership role in the Indian team is at stake and the 29-year-old is likely to look to strengthen the middle order. He played as a middle-order batsman for India in all his nine ODI appearances, scoring 474 runs at an impressive average of 67.71.
Rishabh Pant: He scored just 22 balls and 16 in his first ODI and the team management would like Rishabh Pant to bring a more responsible approach. He was dismissed to finish fourth, which has been India’s Achilles heel since the ODI World Cup 2019. He will have a bigger role to play on the slower wicket of Paarl Pant than stick to his fearless brand of cricket. Pant and Shreyas are expected to switch strikes to avoid further stuttering in the middle range.
Venkatesh Iyer: The left-arm all-rounder’s debut drew mixed reactions considering that Venkatesh did not bowl a single in the match. He was not brought onto the field as there was a turnover in the wicket and the spinners were doing well. However, rivals Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are likely to shift to a more advanced role in the second ODI, especially as the bowlers failed to score runs to halt the opposition’s run.
Nd Odi India V South Africa, Ranchi
Shardul Thakur: Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma took him to the cleaners, which saw the bowling all-rounder take 0/70 in his 10 overs. However, Shardul gave India a respite, picking up an entertaining fifty off 43 deliveries that included five fours and a six. Shardul’s deflection ability makes him a compelling choice for the starting XI.
Jasprit Bumrah: The 28-year-old Indian player is a multi-format player and will lead the pace unit. Bumrah serves as Rahul’s replacement and was the pick of India’s bowlers in the series opener with 2/48 in 10 overs.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Returned to the starting eleven after the tour of Sri Lanka and scored 64 runs in 10 overs without conceding a wicket. The slower wicket may not work in his favour, but Rahul Dravid prefers to stick to his template of supporting experienced players, suggesting that Bhuvneshwar will be preferred over Deepak Chahar.

Mohammed Siraj: Sear could have added his extra pace which India lacked in the series opener. But who will leave if Siraj starts in the starting eleven? India could possibly show Ravichandran Ashwin a way out if they decide to take one more batsman. Ashwin had 53 runs and also scored in the first match, but leggie Yuzvendra Chahal has a slight edge over the seasoned off-spinner.
Yuzvendra Chahal: Ashwin and Chahal put on 106 runs for the wicket in a combined 20 overs, in stark contrast to the opposition who scored three wickets in 26 overs and conceded 124 runs. There is also a possibility that Chahal will miss the second game, but the wicket-taker’s ability could play in his favour.
IND Predicted XI vs SA, 2nd ODI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (C), Rishabh Pant, Venkatesh Iyer, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal
